Australian Press Council Update |
APC UPDATE | 25 May 2012
Four new members have joined the Press Council. They are all online-only publishers. In announcing the new members, the Chair of the Council, Prof Julian Disney said
“This is a very important step in the expansion of the Council’s role to cover online as well as print media. We also cover the websites of our newspaper and magazine members, as well as AAP. Another major news website, ninemsn, has indicated that it wishes to join the Council and we are now discussing the necessary arrangements.”
The four new members are as follows.
Private Media
→ is based in Melbourne and publishes the Crikey website and the Crikey Daily Mail as well as the Power Index and business titles, Smart Company, StartUp Smart, Property Observer and LeadingCompany. Crikey is a leading online subscription publication covering politics, media and business.
Focal Attractions
→ is a Sydney-based publishing and events company which publishes mumbrella.com.au and Encore Magazine. Mumbrella covers “everything under Australia’s media, marketing and entertainment umbrella”, while Encore is a well-established magazine and iPad App targeting the media and entertainment industry.
WorkDay Media
→ is based in Melbourne and publishes Banking Day, a daily subscription newsletter covering news and comment on banking issues in Australia and New Zealand, as well as The Bank Investor, a weekly subscription service for investors in bank shares.
Urban Cinefile
→ is based in Sydney. The Urban Cinefile website was launched in 1997 and has become one of Australia’s leading sources of film reviews, operating exclusively online.
Prof Disney said the Council’s new project on standards of practice in online publishing will benefit greatly from the new members’ expertise.
